So before we get into pictures of what size of fruit the baby is, lets just get to the meat of this story. The time I went to the ER which was early this morning. I’ve mentioned on here a couple of times how I’ve been getting nosebleeds with this pregnancy (they are a common side effect due to the extra blood and sensitive blood vessels) but for the most part I have them figured out. I’ve gotten them a few times after working out, once after flying and then the rest of them have been when I’ve blown my nose (which is the most common). However, last night I was just washing my face before bed and all the sudden I look up and have blood all over the place.
I knew right away this one was different because it was gushing blood (sorry, this is kind of a gross story), like blood going down my throat…no good. But I assume my standard position of sitting on the bathroom floor, head tipped a little forward and pinch my nostrils. This always gets them to stop within about 10 min. I check and still gushing blood, still going down my throat and at this point I’m coughing up blood and blood clots…it was a mess. But I keep pinching my nose…20 min, 30 min. At this point I get an ice pack because I read that couple help. At around 40 min things started lightening up at least so I wasn’t swallowing blood but there was still a steady stream coming out of my nose. Finally after an hour I called the dr on call who told me to get to the ER.
So I wake Chris up and at 1am we head to St. Vincents. Now, I’ve never been to the ER before that I can remember but surprisingly it was a great experience. There was no one there so I felt like I had a million nurses coming in to help and the dr was awesome. As soon as I got there they put this clamp on my nose and I felt some immediate relief. Maybe it was just having the use of my hands back after an hour but still, I think it started working pretty quickly. They checked my blood pressure and drew some blood to check my platelets (which had been low when it was tested a few weeks ago) but basically had me just sit with this clamp on my nose for about a half hour. My blood work came back with higher platelets than before which is good but the Dr made it sound like they still weren’t amazing (I’ll see my dr in 2 weeks to follow up) and then they took the clamp off and sprayed a bunch of Afrin up there because apparently Afrin constricts blood vessels and helps stop nose bleeds. Who knew??
All in all we were there for about an hour and a half and were back home by 3am. They gave me the clamp and the Afrin and said if this happens again (which the nurse implied it could the more pregnant I get) I use my new treatment tools and give myself a half hour to stop the bleeding before going back to the ER.
Even on 4 hours of sleep I don’t feel horrible today. Mostly my nose and face is super sore. It feels like I have a sinus infection. I’m hoping it’s just from all the pressure that was applied to my face last night and not something more. Hopefully I wake up tomorrow and feel fine. And ironically I didn’t get any nausea last night during all of this last night or today which kind of grosses me out and makes me think maybe this baby is actually a vampire hahah.
Speaking of babies, here’s the actual week 16 post…
Get ready for a growth spurt. In the next few weeks, this baby will double their weight and add inches to their length. Right now, he or she is about the size of an avocado (which are still gross to me) – 4 1/2 inches long (head to rump) and 3 1/2 ounces. His/her legs are much more developed, his/her head is more erect than it has been, and his/her eyes have moved closer to the front of his head. His/her ears are close to their final position, too. The patterning of his/her scalp has begun, though his/her locks (which I assume will be curly) aren’t recognizable yet. He/she has even started growing toenails. And there’s a lot happening inside as well. For example, his/her heart is now pumping about 25 quarts of blood each day, and this amount will continue to increase as your baby continues to develop.
What else about me?
No real food differences. And the end of last week I was really loving bagels, particularly cheese but I always love cheese bagels so that doesn’t seem too weird. Still not a big fan of sweet things although I am finally gaining my taste back for my favorite red hot blues chips (not sure if this is good or bad). And this week I’m trying to eat oatmeal with strawberries and almond butter in the morning and egg salad sandwiches for lunch. So far so good.
Weight gain – 10 pounds total
Workouts – so so. Over the weekend in Hood River I went paddle boarding and swam around a little bit so that felt pretty good. Monday I didn’t feel that good so I just rested. Tuesday I did a pilates reformer class and walked a little on the treadmill and then walked about 3 miles to and from dinner club at Gabriel Park. Today I walked the dog for 20 min and then did a couple squats but I tried to keep things low key.
Anything else? This week was the 1st week I wore actual maternity clothes to work. I ordered this dress online at Old Navy for pretty cheap and I love it. It’s a size small and honestly an xs would have fit better (my boobs don’t quite fill it out) but I’m sure I’ll fill this out more later.
And with that, I’m out. Just sitting here on the couch trying not to sneeze for fear of another nose bleed.
Any other preggo ladies/mom’s out there who’ve dealt with nosebleeds?
